Adding Network Printers - OS-X 10.6

  1. Before starting this process, write down the address, make and model for the printer(s) you'd like to add to your computer. Typically the printer's address is taped on the printer. For example, Address: cis-office.edcenter.intra.lane.edu, Model: HP LaserJet 8100 N. Don't collect the IP addresses for the printers.

  2. If you are using a wireless connection to the 4J network, log in now by opening Safari or Firefox and entering your 4J username and password when prompted.

  3. Click on the Apple menu in the upper left corner of your computer screen and select System Preferences….

  4. Click the Print & Fax icon.

  5. You should now see a window similar to the one pictured below, but yours may be showing printers or fax machines already added to your list. If there are any printers you'd like to remove from this list, click the printer in the left column, then click the - button to delete it. To add a new printer, click the + button.

  6. Click the IP icon toward the top of the window. For Protocol, select Line Printer Daemon - LPD. For Address type in the address for the printer, not the IP address. Leave Queue blank. For Name, type in a name you'd like to appear on the Printer list so that when you print a document, this name will appear on the list of Printers and you will be able to identify which printer to which you'd like to print. For Location, you can leave this blank or type the location of the printer. For Print Using, select Select Printer Software....

  7. This window will appear. Scroll through the list and find your printer's make and model, select it and click the OK button.

  8. When you return to this window, click the Add button.

  9. A window similar to this may appear, which lists additional features that may be available on this printer. If you are aware of any of these features on this printer, check the box to the left of the feature or select an item from the drop down menu so you have access to these features. Then click the Continue button.

  10. You have now added this printer to your printer list. When you return to this window, don't check the box to the left of Share this printer on the network. If you would like this printer to be your default printer, for Default printer select the name of the printer you just added. If you would like to add more printers, click the + button and go through these instructions again. If you are finished adding printers, close this window by clicking the red dot in the upper left corner of this window.

  11. Open a document and test to see if the printer(s) you added to the printer list work(s).
